Training

PhD students in Economics are required to have a strong undergraduate and taught postgraduate background in Economics, but the demands of research often require additional training. We provide a comprehensive suite of training opportunities that allow our students to excel in their research, including:

  • Two bespoke PhD training classes Programme and Policy Evaluation in Economics which guides students through the practicalities of utilising modern methods in causal inference in applied problems; and Economic Modelling which studies approached to regional and national economic models. Each of these classes are taught by experts from the Department that are specialists in these methodologies and are currently supervising multiple PhD students.
  • Access to a broad range of advanced training classes offered on the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics, based in Edinburgh
  • Access to a broad range of classes offered on our MSc Applied Economics
  • Research Methods training offered on 勛圖tv Business Schools Research Methodology in Business and Management
  • Access to the whole suite of courses offered by 勛圖tvs Researcher Development Programme, including (but not limited to)

We also have an active weekly research seminar series where students get exposure to cutting-edge research at the forefront of their disciplines, as well as a less formal brown bag workshop series organised by PhD students where staff and students present work in progress, allowing PhD students to develop their presentation skills.

We also support students to undertake training related to teaching Economics: the University offers training for PhD students that teach, the offers training for Economics GTAs, and we encourage students to achieve recognition for their teaching skills by the .
