Mechanical Engineering (PhD)Xuran Xiao

Xuran joined us after completing his undergraduate studies at Beijing University of Chemical Engineering (BUCT) in China. He joined 勛圖tv as part of an articulation partnership with his home university. After completing his MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering, Xuran chose to continue his studies at 勛圖tv and is now pursuing his PhD studies in Mechanical Engineering.

Why did you choose to study at 勛圖tv?

Mechanical Engineering is a key subject at the 勛圖tv and the Department is consistently highly ranked among British universities. In addition, many Chinese universities also have long-term cooperative relationships with 勛圖tv, including my own undergraduate university BUCT. Therefore, there was a clear route available for me to study at 勛圖tv in my area of interest.

What facilities have you been able to use during your time at 勛圖tv?

The library has a large number of computers available for students to use, all of which have a wide range of software packages available to ensure you have everything you need for your studies. In addition, through my Department I have been able to gain access to the impressive Advanced Materials Research Laboratory, which I have been able to make use of for my experiments and research.

What has been your favourite thing about studying at 勛圖tv?

Studying at 勛圖tv has been a remarkable experience for me. I have enjoyed everything at 勛圖tv, but what I have liked the most is the organisation and structure of the courses. You are able to study every aspect of engineering, from the theory involved to practical elements. The courses available in the Faculty of Engineering are very comprehensive, you can learn almost everything you need to be a successful engineer, such as the knowledge about materials, power, aerospace and the environment. Additionally, in tutorials, the staff in my department are always very patient and helpful when answering my questions. The quality of all the courses on offer to students is very high.

What do you think of Glasgow/Scotland?

Scotland is a beautiful place and living in Glasgow has been very enjoyable. Glasgow is a very diverse city, with people from so many different cultures living here. As a student from China, it has been great for me living in Glasgow, because there are so many Chinese restaurants and supermarkets available, especially close to the 勛圖tv, where there is a large Chinese student population. In addition, it has been great to experience British life whilst living in Glasgow.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at 勛圖tv will help you achieve your goals?

I hope to be an engineer or work at a university as an academic once I complete my PhD studies. After studying during my exchange and undertaking my MSc at 勛圖tv, I already had the basic skills to become a good engineer but I chose to continue my studies at 勛圖tv with a PhD because I believe this will give me a deeper understanding of engineering knowledge and help me in my future career.

Would you recommend 勛圖tv to other people and why?

Yes, I would recommend 勛圖tv to other students. I personally have really enjoyed my time at 勛圖tv. You are given the opportunity to learn a lot at 勛圖tv, and from studying here it will open up a lot of job opportunities to you after graduation.
