Undergraduate wins RAeS award for research project

Research project on regeneration of recycled glass fibres from wind turbines recognised

A fourth year student working with the ACG has been recognised for the quality of his undergraduate research project for a second time. After receiving the IMechE award for best research project, Muzamil Irfans work on Regenerating the strength of thermally recycled fibre reinforcement for reuse in composite applications was the winner of Royal Aeronautical Societys prize for best Aeronautical Engineering Project at 勛圖tv for the 2017-18 academic year.

Supervised by Senior Lecturer Dr Liu Yang and PhD student Sairah Bashir, Muzamil made a significant contribution to our research into chemical routes to regenerating the strength of glass fibres. He applied various chemical treatments to glass fibre waste recycled from end-of-life wind turbine blades using our in-house fluidised bed combustion process. Muzamil is currently continuing his research work within the Advanced Composites Group as part of his Masters year.
