My biggest challenge when learning Mandarin is remembering the characters. To be fluent in Chinese you have to know around 3000 characters ¨C quite an increase from the 26 that you need in English. Now that I¡¯ve begun to learn more about the characters it easier for me to remember them. Many characters are made up of building blocks called ¡®radicals¡¯; these often lend their meaning and/or their pronunciation to the characters. Once you start to recognise these remembering characters the task of learning characters becomes a lot less Herculean.

Our classes are only one part of the way we¡¯re learning Chinese. Daily, we wade through thousands of Characters on menus and posters. The feeling that you get when you are able to recognise a character that you learned in class just the week before is so gratifying that you just want to go back home and keep studying! We¡¯ve all made lots of non-Scottish friends with whom Chinese is our only shared language, so we have to use it daily. Unfortunately for my non-English speaking friends they are much better than me so I get a lot more language benefit from the friendship than they do, but at least I can supply them with shortbread!
