Personal statement
Joanne is Programme Lead for the MSc Clinical Health Psychology programme, is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society, and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. Joanne co-leads a popular Year 4 module leader on Psychology's undergraduate degree programme and delivers lectures at postgraduate level. She designs and delivers high quality research-led teaching materials, undertakes learning, assessment, and feedback activities, and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate student dissertations. A compassionate pedagogy underlies her approach, valuing each student with consideration of background. She recognises the importance of widening access mentoring care experienced students and providing support throughout their academic journey. Joanne values education and supports students in realizing their potential. She is recognised as being a supportive teacher receiving annual nominations for Teaching Excellence Awards in the following categories Engagement with students, Going the extra mile and Outstanding feedback on assessment. Joanne was nominated for a HaSS Teaching Excellence Award for the category Effective Sustained Contribution (2025) and she also received the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (2021) recognising her contribution within the Department of Psychological Sciences and Health. Joanne engages in both domain-specific and pedagogical research via the supervisory role. She sits on several internal committees and working groups at Department, Faculty and University level, and has external roles with professional organisations.

Research Interests
One of Joanne鈥檚 main research interests is the imposter phenomenon, which is characterised by feeling like a fraud and being unable to internalise success. Joanne's focus is on understanding feelings of imposterism and its relationship with other constructs such as perceived belonging, academic stress, perfectionism and psychological distress reported by students in higher education so that suitable interventions can be designed to support students throughout their academic journey who experience the phenomenon.
Joanne is also passionate about the psychology of physical activity. She has been involved in several research projects designed to increase levels of physical activity and improve psychological and physical health outcomes in stroke survivors. She has knowledge and understanding of intervention research, frameworks and psychological theories used within the physical activity domain.聽Other interests of Joanne's include cognitive measurement in those who have sustained brain trauma and methodologies such as the N-of-1 approach and time-series analyses.聽

- Scholarship of Teaching Collaborative Writing Groups (2023-26) is a facilitated staff development programme that supports staff to take their next steps in scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and undertake collaborative scholarship projects.
