Personal statement

I have been with the University since 1994, first as a PhD student, then as a research fellow, and finally as a member of academic staff. Since 2007 I have been a lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. I teach the fundamental principles of electrical engineering including power system protection, in which I specialise. My ambition is to undertake fundamental research on unconventional power system protection methods for transmission and distribution networks of the future.

My research activities often inform the on-going revision of the engineering recommendations and grid codes in order ensure safe operation of the power system under the envisaged high renewable energy scenarios. I also provide technical expertise and research support to the industrial working groups and organisations such as Grid Code Review Panel (GCRP), Distribution Code Review Panel (DCRP) and Energy Networks Association (ENA).

To engage with research community, I actively participate in the activities of the international engineering organisations such as CIGRE, IET and IEEE.

Teaching

I currently teach the following classes:

  • Electronic & Electrical Principles 3 (level 3): Within this class I deliver 12h of lectures including fundamentals of power engineering, three-phase systems and fault level calculations. I also participate in the tutorial sessions and coordinate practical laboratory sessions on energy supply systems.
  • Power System Design, Operation & Protection (level 4 and 5): Within this class I teach 12h of lectures on power system protection, including differential and distance protection principles, design and applications.
  • Advanced Power System Analysis And Protection (level 5): Within this class I deliver 12h of lectures on advanced power system protection, covering protection of distributed generators and advanced elements of distance protection.
  • I also deliver short courses to industry on various aspects of power system protection.
