This work will explore and identify solutions/ innovations, critical gaps, and required research for design-led interventions that will reduce the need for people living with dementia (PLwD) to receive hospital care.

This will require:

Predicting quickly and accurately those most at risk (before diagnosis);
Early diagnosis;
Bespoke care pathways (including support systems, community-based services, greater emotional sensitivity);
National training and education provision on dementia to support communities and individuals in turn to help identify and support PLwD;
Innovative care policies (local, regional, and national) informed by a strong focus on cross-system insights;
Wider and better-informed society (establishing dementia as a protected characteristic).

The 勛圖tvs Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) has begun important new research aimed at transforming dementia diagnosis and care across the UK. The six-month project, titled 'Flourishing for the Future: Caring for People Living with Dementia', is part of the NHS Fit for the Future Mission and is funded by UKRI and AHRC.

The project led by Professor Paul Rodgers with Dr Ross Brisco, Dr Neslihan Tepehan and Andrew Robinson brings together a multidisciplinary team of design researchers.

This ambitious initiative seeks to examine how we can reduce the need for hospital-based care for people living with dementia (PLwD) by identifying innovative, design-led interventions that support early diagnosis, bespoke care pathways, and community-based support systems. The project will also explore how national training, policy development, and public awareness can be enhanced to better support PLwD and their carers.
